Exploring Interpersonal Neural Synchrony Across Generations. A study published in PLOS Biology by researchers from ETH Zurich explores how social interactions between people of the same and different generations shape longitudinal changes in interpersonal neural synchrony (INS), loneliness, and social connection. While intergenerational interactions are known to combat loneliness and increase wellbeing, the physiological mechanisms behind these developing relationships have largely remained unknown. To investigate these mechanisms, researchers utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning to track cortical activity across six creative drawing sessions. The study compared 31 intergenerational dyads (adults over 70 paired with adults aged 18 to 35) with 30 same-generation dyads (younger adults). Key Findings on Brain Synchrony and Social Connection. Collaborative Synchrony: Across both groups, brain synchrony was significantly higher when dyads drew together compared to when they drew alone., Longitudinal Changes: Over the course of the six sessions, neural synchrony increased among same-generation pairs but decreased among intergenerational pairs. This indicates that INS is a dynamic, context-sensitive metric that evolves as partners settle into different interaction strategies over time., Predicting Loneliness and Closeness: Among intergenerational pairs, synchrony in the right inferior frontal cortex and right temporoparietal junction while drawing alone was predictive of loneliness. In contrast, synchrony in the right inferior frontal cortex while intergenerational pairs drew together predicted feelings of social closeness. Implications for Social Research. The findings demonstrate that interpersonal neural synchrony is not simply a "more is better" signal. Instead, brain coupling adapts dynamically as relationships form. These insights reinforce the value of using multi-session hyperscanning to track the complexities of real-world relationship formation, providing a physiological perspective on how structured community programs can effectively combat social isolation.
