The subject’s treatment plan initially included isolated exercise to improve her ability to utilize hip flexion without lumbar spine compensatory motion. This was done in conjunction with intrinsic hip flexor, lateral rotator, and abductor muscle strengthening. After successfully improving the above movements and weaknesses, further functional and integrated strengthening movements were performed to improve her trunk and hip control both bilaterally and while on a single leg to best replicate the stability that would be needed while running competitive distances. She was also instructed on improving her anterior trunk lean while training during her runs.
While traditionally viewed as a beneficial adaptation to preserve stability in the presence of knee pathology, excessive muscle co-activation may be detrimental for joint health when extrapolated to repetitive movement patterns over time. Lesser hamstrings strength relative to the quadriceps (low H:Q strength ratio) may influence neuromuscular patterns about the knee, as it is reported to increase risk for lower extremity injury among healthy females.
Kinematic strategies and focus on timing/temporal parameters in Gait Report as well as lateral shift (symmetry) as well as impulses off metatarsals using 10zone model were imperative for driving readiness. Once shift was within reasonable limits with standard deviations <+/-5cm progress to running was completed under trainer guidance. In running, positioning (external placement asymmetries), posture and contacts were addressed to continue progression and training program.
This study investigated the effect of jaw clenching on anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) and reactive postural adjustments (RPAs). Eight healthy adults were exposed to predictable external perturbations with and without submaximal jaw clenching. We recorded the three-dimensional body kinematics, ground reaction forces, and electromyography (EMG) of 12 muscles. EMG onset, integrated EMG, and positions of the center-of-mass (COM) and center-of-pressure (COP) during the anticipatory and reactive phases of postural adjustments were computed and compared for the jaw clenching and control conditions. Jaw clenching resulted in an earlier onset of APAs and a greater amplitude of trunk and lower limb EMG activities in the APAs and RPAs. There were no differences in the COM and COP displacements after the perturbation. Jaw clenching is effective for enhancing APAs and RPAs, although it may not increase postural stability following predictable external perturbation in healthy adults.
Electromyography (EMG) measures muscle response or electrical activity in by way of a nerve's stimulation of the muscle. In particular, Surface EMG signals are recorded by non-invasive electrodes and assesses muscle function by recording muscle activity from the surface above the muscle on the skin. Thee EMG signals are becoming increasingly important in many applications, including clinical/biomedical, prosthesis and other rehabilitation devices.
We had such a great time at the 2021 Noraxon User Group Meeting. This year we had an incredible lineup of inspiring speakers & Noraxon users from different walks of life. This event gave novice & experienced users a chance to learn, grow, and network with people who they might not otherwise have the chance to meet with. We’re looking forward to doing it again next year!
A frequently calibrated IMU system provides reliable gait measurements; comparing highly to OMC after removing modelling differences. Calibration poses can be implemented accurately for most angles and consistently. IMU-measured gait data are clinically useful and comparable within participants, but should not be compared to OMC-measured data.
Imagine trying to explain how to run to someone who’d never done it before—the incredibly complex sequence of forces and joint angles and muscle contractions that you need to coordinate in exactly the right order. That complexity is why it’s really hard to build a robot that can run on two legs, and it’s also why attempts to improve running form by tweaking a joint here or an angle there have generally backfired.
Half Moon Pose and Warrior Three Pose elicited the highest activation for both the gluteus maximus and the gluteus medius. Higher gluteus medius activation was seen in males and inexperienced subjects compared to their female and experienced counterparts.
Ultium Motion, Noraxon’s next-generation inertial motion capture system, is equipped with a patent-pending state-of-the-art sensor design that delivers accurate & reliable kinematic data for all types of movement – including high velocity and high impact conditions – while maintaining the advantages of the multi-device myoRESEARCH software platform through the universal connectivity of the Ultium receiver.
This study proposes a feature selection method that can obtain feature subsets for HAR as well as a sensor-to-segment coordinate alignment algorithm and a joint angle estimation algorithm. Comparing with other feature selection algorithms, the proposed algorithm can greatly discard features and maintain comparable classification performance. The sensor coordinate calibration algorithm is proved to be beneficial for HAR.

The National Cannabis Risk Management Association (NCMRA) is interested in minimizing the strain undergone by cannabis workers, specifically at the trimming station, to reduce repetitive motion injuries and ensure worker safety. The team determined that creating an ergonomic table would best improve worker safety.
