The AI-Therapist Duo in Virtual Reality

A Triadic Approach to Digital Art Therapy. Visual Exposure Art Therapy (VEAT) is conventionally delivered using static physical or flat-screen media, which inherently limits both immersion and adaptive personalization. To overcome these limitations, researchers presented a novel approach titled "The AI-Therapist Duo in Virtual Reality: A Triadic Design for Immersive Exposure Digital Art Therapy" at the 34th ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP 2026). Introducing IEDAT: Immersive Exposure Digital Art Therapy. The research team introduced IEDAT, an immersive virtual reality system that effectively combines AI-driven artwork recommendations with therapist-guided, human-in-the-loop personalization. By delivering therapy sessions within a constructed virtual museum environment, the system enables highly adaptive exposure while simultaneously preserving professional clinical control and transparency for the therapist. Measuring Neurophysiological Outcomes To validate the efficacy of this immersive triadic design, outcomes were evaluated using a combination of self-reported negative affect, reflection analysis, and advanced neurophysiological measures. Neural Monitoring: Researchers utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure prefrontal regional homogeneity (ReHo) alongside EEG band power tracking., Behavioral Findings: While both traditional and immersive modalities successfully reduced negative affect, the immersive VR condition uniquely elicited richer, recovery-oriented meaning-making within participant reflections., Physiological Correlates: These qualitative experiential differences were further contextualized and supported by neurophysiological patterns. The VR modality showed increased post-session prefrontal ReHo and a directional increase in low-frequency (delta-theta) EEG power.
