CREST–MST Trial: Landmark Study Validates Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST)

A landmark multicenter Phase III trial, conducted across Canada and the U.S., has established Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST) as a compelling alternative to traditional Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The study, known as CREST–MST , marks a turning point in convulsive therapy by addressing the primary barrier to treatment: cognitive side effects. Key Study Insights: Non-Inferior Efficacy: MST achieved comparable remission and response rates to right unilateral ultra-brief pulse-width ECT (RUL-UB ECT), the current clinical gold standard., Cognitive Preservation: MST demonstrated a substantially more favorable safety profile, with significantly fewer patients experiencing clinically meaningful worsening in autobiographical memory., Rapid Reorientation: Patients treated with MST showed faster times to reorientation following treatment compared to ECT., Focal Activation: Unlike ECT, which uses electrical current, MST utilizes a magnetic field (via the MagPro XP Black™ and TwinCoil™ ) to induce therapeutic seizures. This allows for more targeted brain activation, sparing regions associated with memory and executive function., Clinical Impact: By preserving the antidepressant benefits of convulsive therapy while protecting cognitive health, MST has the potential to broaden patient acceptance and address the high unmet need in treatment-resistant depression.
