Cardiac Synchrony During Collaborative Drawing: A Longitudinal Comparison of Same Generation and Intergenerational Dyads

Study Overview: Physiological Responses in Social Encounters. Community programs frequently bring people of different generations together to foster relationships and combat loneliness. However, the physiological consequences of repeated intergenerational encounters remain largely unknown. A recent longitudinal hyperscanning study published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences explored how these social programs shape dyadic physiological responses, shedding light on the mechanisms of relationship formation. Methodology & Hyperscanning Setup. Researchers tracked 31 intergenerational pairs (older/younger adults) and 30 same-generation pairs (younger adults) across a six-session collaborative drawing program. This points to marginally enhanced arousal during active collaboration between older and younger adults., Measuring Relationships: The study concludes that while fNIRS and cardiac synchrony provide valuable physiological context, relationship development in this specific setting was best characterized by behavioral tracking (proximity) and self-report measures.
