Storz – Neurolith

NEUROLITH® – an innovative system with convincing design features! The special ergonomic shape of the TPS® handpiece minimizes hand fatigue to facilitate treatment working directly on the patient. The coupling surface adapts easily to any shape of head, making the treatment with focused pulses simple and efficient. The NEUROLITH® software includes patient management functionalities with retrievable data and recommended treatment parameters.

Transcranical Pulse Stimulation

MODERN THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURE FOR TREATING ALZHEIMER’S SYMPTOMS

The key mechanism induced by TPS is mechanotransduction. The stimulation of growth factors not only improves cerebral blood flow, but also promotes the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) and nerve regeneration. An additional effect is the release of nitric oxide, which leads to direct vasodilation and improved blood circulation.

Advantages of the NEUROLITH

  • Focused stimulation of deep cerebral regions
  • Personalized 3D visualization of patient’s head
  • 3D infrared camera system for precise cerebral tracking
  • USB interface for MRI data import
  • Patient database

KEY FACTS

  • Used in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s
  • Objective: to promote/maintain the mental capabilities of people with Alzheimer’s disease
  • Acoustic pulses generated outside the body are introduced specifically into the brain regions requiring treatment.
  • Treatment on an outpatient basis
  • Pain-free and straightforward
  • Average treatment duration 30 minutes per session; a course of treatment involves 6 sessions over 2 weeks

Pulse stimulation involves acoustic pulses being generated in an application handpiece and directed into the patient’s head. It is here that they produce their effect through targeted stimulation of the relevant cerebral regions. This is a non-invasive procedure, the pulses passing through the skin and skull without damaging them. The acoustic pulses generated by TPS have been successfully used in medicine since as long ago as 1980 to treat many different conditions – examples being treatment of tendons, ligaments, muscle and bone.

NEUROBIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF TPS

  • Mechanotransduction
  • Increase in cell permeability
  • Stimulation of mechanosensitive ion channels
  • Release of nitric oxide , which leads to vasodilation, increased metabolic activity and angiogenesis and has an anti-inflammatory effect
  • Stimulation of vascular growth factors
  • Stimulation of BDNF
  • Migration and differentiation of stem cells

TPS AND ALZHEIMER’S

Transcranial Pulse Stimulation is a therapeutic option approved since 2018 that is used in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of TPS® is, by stimulating various regions of the brain, to promote the cognitive abilities of Alzheimer’s sufferers and maintain these faculties for as long as possible.

To date, more than 1,500 treatment sessions have been carried out with TPS®. Patients and their families report that treatment has resulted in improved verbal ability, better memory and improved sense of direction.
