Upper Limb Rehabilitation at Concentric Healthcare

Last week, our team in Perth paid Concentric Rehabilitation at Midlands a visit for at trial of the Icone upperlimb intensive neurorehabilitation robot. This was led by their physiotherapist Godfrey Asimwe, who took one of his clients who was recovering from hemicraniectomy through a 15-minute therapy session.

The client, who before his procedure was an avid player on the PlayStation console, commented that he truly enjoyed the session and was very fond of the soccer game. He completed 300 movements in the space of 15 minutes, which allowed him to get the most of his 45-minute session at the clinic.

Godfrey was also impressed with the system, and commented that the system was a great adjunct to therapy to facilitate repetitions and motivate. He added that the versatility of the evaluation tasks challenged the client in many movement types in a safe and controlled manner.

The Running Blueprint Visual Sample with Noraxon IMUs

EMG Analysis of Hip & Trunk Muscle Activity in Subjects With Gluteus Medius Weakness

Lee et al had integrated the Ultium EMG system with myoResearch software to investigate the effects of different side bridge exercises on the hip and trunk muscles in subjects with gluteus medius weakness in order to determine which variation would be best to help strengthen the gluteal muscles. Side bridge exercises strengthen the hip, trunk, and abdominal muscles and challenge the trunk muscles without the high lumbar compression associated with trunk extension or curls. Previous research using electromyography (EMG) reports that performance of the side bridge exercise highly activates the gluteus medius (Gmed). However, to the best of our knowledge, no previous research has investigated EMG amplitude in the hip and trunk muscles during side bridge exercise in subjects with Gmed weakness. The purpose of this study was to examine the EMG activity of the hip and trunk muscles during 3 variations of the side bridge exercise (side bridge, side bridge with knee flexion, and side bridge with knee flexion and hip abduction of the top leg) in subjects with Gmed weakness.

Gold Standard Physiotherapy KineLive Demonstration

Last week, the AEROBE Australia team was invited to illustrate the benefits of KineLive with sports & rehabilitation sessions for all physiotherapist members at Gold Standard Physiotherapy in Blacktown. From our demonstration, the EMG’s attached on one of the physiotherapists exhibited an imbalance in Justin’s left knee that resulted from a reconstruction of his left vastus lateralis. The Longest Day – Alzheimers Awareness Day with Aerobe fNIRS Solutions

The Longest Day  x Alzheimers Awareness

 

Every year on June 20th, the Alzheimers association celebrates the summer solstice because as the longest day of the year it symbolizes the challenging journey of people living with the disease and their caregivers (Avitur, 2015). On this day, fundraising activities are conducted to raise funds to support the Alzheimer’s Association research, treatment, and education seminars to encourage awareness. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disease that develops subtle symptoms for patients with failures in memory, it has been reported that 60-80% of dementia cases worldwide are AD (Yu et al., 2020). Our NIRSIT System

Obelab’s NIRSIT System, in particular, is an innovative wireless brain imaging technology applied by researchers and clinicians of neuroscience to understand the development of diseases through the analysis of the prefrontal cortex. The portable hardware system applies infrared light with a Broadmann channel distribution to provide real-time brain activation data while the patient undertakes emotional and mental activities. For example, the N-back test assesses the brain’s hemodynamics while the patient undertakes a test on memory. As an alternative to MRI, this brain imaging analysis tool matches the resolution of MRI while processing data that is user-friendly and simple to apply into neurology, psychiatry, education, and basic research.

Although there is no current cure for AD, it is evident from clinical research that the early administration of medication therapies or daily training can diminish the progression of the disease while improving AD patient’s quality of life (ibid). The application of fNIRS technology is the ideal solution for Alzheimers research and clinical application. Its application provides real-time maps (with temporal and spatial resolution) of cortical activation to non-invasively measure the cortical hemodynamic as oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin changes (Lancia, Mammarella, Bianco & Quaresima, 2017).
